Latest Project Success for the UG in the Horizon Project

Success for the team led by Prof. Dr hab. Maciej Wołowicz from the University of Gdańsk’s Institute of Oceanography – the European Commission funds the project as part of the Horizon 2020 Programme.

The main assumption of the project Assemble Plus (Association of European Marine Biological Laboratories) is to ensure that scientists from Europe have access to research infrastructure of partners in a consortium free of charge, so that they can carry out research projects selected on the basis of competitions. The University of Gdańsk will also be engaged in work packets from the “Joint Research Activities” group (genetic research into marine organisms and the development of academic diving) and Networking Activities (creating an oceanographic data base and establishing a development strategy for European marine stations).

The project will be carried out over two years in a consortium comprising the following partners:

  • Universite Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6 (FR) - coordinator
  • Nacionalni Institut Za Biologijo (SI)
  • Stichting Nioz, Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NL)
  • Helsingin Yliopisto (FI)
  • Instytut Oceanologii Polskiej Akademii Nauk (PL)
  • National University of Ireland, Galway (IE)
  • Goeteborgs Universitet (SE)
  • Universidad del Pais Vasco/ Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (ES)
  • Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (EL)
  • The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (IL)
  • Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (IT)
  • Universitetet i Bergen (NO)
  • Centro de ciencias do Mar do Algarve (PT)
  • Alfred-Wegener-Institut Helmholtz- Zentrum fuer Polar- und Meeresforschung (DE)
  • Max Planck Gesellschaft zur Foerderung der Wissenschaften e.v. (DE)
  • Vlaams Instituut voor de zee VZW (BE)
  • The Scottish Association for Marine Science LBG (UK)
  • The University Court of the University of St Andrews (UK)
  • Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (UK)
  • Natural Environment Research Council (UK)
  • Marine Scotland (UK)
  • AquaTT UETP LTD (IE).

The remaining University of Gdańsk Horizon 2020 Programme projects are:

- ELIPTIC ─ Electrification of public transport in cities

The aim of the project is to analyse the potential of existing public transport systems (including light railways, underground, trams and trolleybuses) for switching to electric propulsion systems in line with the multimodal mobility trend in urbanised areas – project leader: Dr Marcin Wołek (Faculty of Economics)

- NanoREG II ─ Development and implementation of Grouping and Safe-by-Design approaches within regulatory frameworks

The project concerns the rapidly developing nanomaterials market, which is closely linked to developments in technology. The launch of the NanoREG project concerns research into risk evaluation in the use of nanomaterials and the corresponding legal regulation – project leader: Dr hab. Tomasz Puzyn, associate professor at the Faculty of Chemistry.

- Virus-X: Viral Metagenomics for Innovation Value

The main aim of the project is to analyse metagenomic libraries of genetic material derived from bacteria and viruses isolated from extreme environments in order to give a better understanding of how microbes function in configurations characterised by their extreme complexity – project leader: Prof. Dr hab. Tadeusz Kaczorowski (Faculty of Biology)

- STARBIOS 2 ─ Structural Transformation to Attain Responsible BIOSciences

The concept behind the STAR BIOS 2 project is the formulation and implementation in several selected scientific institutions conducting research into the biological, chemical and biotechnological sciences (biosciences) in their widest sense of individual action plans to enable structural changes in the given institutions – project leader: Prof. Dr hab. Krzysztof Bielawski (Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG and MUG)
