On 21 February 2017, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Dr hab. Tadeusz Dmochowski, associate professor, was elected to the five-member Jury of the Political Science Committee Award at the Polish Academy of Sciences which recognises outstanding articles on the subject of political science.
The Director of the Baltic Opera Warcisław Kunc and the Rector of the University of Gdańsk Prof. Jerzy Gwizdała have signed a cooperation agreement with a view to jointly popularise science, knowledge and culture, to exchange experience in didactics and to organise joint educational and cultural enterprises.
The agreement was signed on 14 February 2017 at the University of Gdańsk’s Rector’s Office.
On 7 February 2017 a letter of intent was signed between the Borough of the City of Sopot, represented by the Mayor of Sopot Dr Jacek Karnowski, and the University of Gdańsk, represented by the Rector of the University of Gdańsk Professor UG, Dr hab. Jerzy Gwizdała. The letter expresses the desire to continue joint efforts to support the education of Sopot school children by university staff. The partners will jointly develop initiatives such as the ‘Between’ or ‘Literacki Sopot’ festivals, aimed at popularising knowledge of the humanities.
The Financial Ombudsman is a new institution established to protect the rights of clients in the financial market. The Scientific Advisory Committee is an advisory body with the Ombudsman in matters relating to the protection of clients of financial services. It brings together individuals from the world of science representing different fields of knowledge and research centres, including Prof. Anna Jurkowska-Zeidler from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk, who has been appointed Vice-Chair.
On 12 December 2016 a cooperation agreement was signed between the University of Gdańsk and the EXPERYMENT Science Centre in Gdynia. The agreement concerns cooperation in the field of popularising science and knowledge, and the exchange of experience in didactics as well as organising joint educational and scientific undertakings.
Between 17-21 November 2016 the UG’s School of Foreign Languages organised a trip for students of the university to the European Parliament in Brussels. Among the participants were students of Journalism and Social Communication, Diplomacy, European Business Administration, International Economic Relations and Political Science.
The grand opening of the “Dune Laboratory II” was held on 13 October 2016. The aim of the project was to create an artificial dune to be used for the preservation of dune species, including protected species, research into the survival and development of plants found in sandy soil (psammophytes) and for educational purposes. The Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Mieczysław Struk has granted the project his patronage, with the DCT Gdańsk SA Container Terminal and the Foundation for the Development of the University of Gdańsk as partners.
On 8 October 2016 a tree-planting ceremony was held at the UG’s Baltic Campus in Gdańsk-Oliwa, organised by the First Club of Soroptimist International in Gdańsk to mark 20 years of the club’s existence.
