Brewer’s yeast to link science and business
A combination of science, passion and business can bring about some truly practical success. In the case of the combined efforts of academics from the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG&MUG and the company Fermentum Mobile the benefits are connected with the innovative production of brewer’s yeast. The University of Gdańsk’s SPV has taken over part of the shares of Fermentum Mobile, the first company in Poland to become involved in innovative research into and the production of liquid brewer’s yeast, boasting modern laboratories which allow the highest standards of production to be maintained.
Krzysztof Bielawski, Director of the UG’s Technology Transfer Centre, sums it up: “We are hoping that, with the largest university in Pomerania joining in, the company will be able to expand its consumer base and increase its capital”.
In November 2015, on the initiative of employees of the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG&MUG, co-founders of the Fermentum Mobile company, and the Board of Directors of the University of Gdańsk’s SPV – TechTransBalt Sp. z o.o., some of Fermentum Mobile’s shares were taken over by the UG’s SPV. Fermentum Mobile is a company which combines experience gained during academic work with a passion for biotechnology. The founders of the company include graduates and employees of the University of Gdańsk. Analysis and assistance relating to the MOBI4Health project, financed by the European Commission as part of the UE’s 7th Framework Programme for Research, was crucial in establishing the company.
Fermentum Mobile sp. z o.o. is the first Polish company to specialise in research and production of liquid brewer’s yeast. It boasts modern laboratories which allow the highest standards of production to be maintained. Fermentum Mobile has its own brewer’s yeast culture bank which consists of 16 yeast strains from renowned research centres in Germany, Belgium or the UK, to name a few.
Domestic home brewers will also find something of interest in the company’s offer. Irish darkness, Belgian hills, Nails and bananas or Bavarian valley – these are just a few of the yeast strains, with each representing an inimitable style and taste in the beverage it produces. The company caters not only to home brewers but, more and more frequently, to craft breweries. On the shelves of good beer shops you can now find beverages fermented with Fermentum Mobile yeast. The company is planning to introduce an additional offer of analytical services for small and medium-sized breweries which do not possess their own lab facilities.
“The mission of the UG’s Technology Transfer Centre and the University of Gdańsk’s SPV – TechTransBalt Sp. z o.o is to provide help in the process of commercialising the knowledge gained during academic work at university. Fermentum Mobile serves as an example of combining academic knowledge with the passion of experienced scientists and entrepreneurs. We hope that, thanks to the largest university in Pomerania joining our ranks, the company will be able to expand its consumer base and increase its capital”, says Director of the UG’s Technology Transfer Centre and Chairman of TechTransBalt, Professor Dr hab. Krzysztof Bielawski.
