University of Gdańsk amongst best universities in the world in the field of Environmental Science & Engineering – ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018
The University of Gdańsk is amongst the best universities in the world in the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018 in the field of Environmental Science & Engineering. Research institutions were assessed in 54 disciplines of science, including such fields as life sciences or exact, medical, engineering, technical and social sciences. The University of Gdańsk features in the top five hundred on the list of best universities in the field of Environmental Science & Engineering (research and environmental technology) with a result of 31.3 points. The ranking assesses scientific publications ─ number, citations, international cooperation as well as the number of articles published in the best scientific journals in a given discipline. This place in the ranking is an enormous distinction and confirms the highest quality of scientific publications prepared at the University of Gdańsk.
“For nearly 30 years the University of Gdańsk has been developing scientific research and academic activity in the field of environmental sciences. We are the first university in Poland to open Environmental Protection as a field of study and to acquire the right to award the titles of doctor and doctor with habilitation in this discipline. There are several excellent research teams working at the University of Gdańsk’s Faculties of Biology, Oceanography and Geography and Chemistry, focusing on the study and assessment of the impact of human activity on the environment. The studies include counteracting negative environmental impact, detecting pollution and devising modern technologies to prevent pollution. We can boast the best scientific publications and a high number of citations in this field. The fact that the University of Gdańsk has been distinguished in this discipline in the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking testifies to the highest world-class level of research conducted by our scientists” states Prof. Piotr Stepnowski, UG’s Vice-Rector for Research and International Cooperation.
It should also be remembered that the University of Gdańsk has enjoyed very good standing in international rankings. As one of 14 Polish higher education institutions it featured among the world’s one thousand best academic institutions in the QS World University Ranking 2019, which is considered one of the four most important world ranking lists of universities, alongside the Times Higher Education, U-Multirank and the Academic Ranking of World Universities. The University of Gdańsk is the only university in Pomerania to feature in the QS World University Ranking 2019, at the same time coming fifth amongst Polish classical universities.
The University of Gdańsk can also boast tenth place among the 128 Polish universities in the uniRank Polish University Ranking 2018. The position occupied by the university in this ranking gives it the leading place amongst all Pomeranian universities, as well as seventh place among classical universities in Poland.
The presence of the University of Gdańsk in another international ranking, the Emerging Economies University Ranking 2018, should also be stressed. The ranking offers a comparison of universities from countries referred to as ‘emerging economies’. The latest ranking features 378 best higher education institutions from 42 countries, including 12 universities from Poland, amongst which the University of Gdańsk has come ninth.
