UG’s Institute of Informatics – laying of the foundation act

A state-of-the-art building of the Institute of Informatics of the University of Gdańsk, with a cubic capacity of nearly 23,000 m3 and equipped with the latest IT devices, is emerging in the UG Baltic Campus in Gdańsk Oliwa. The investment is partially funded from the Regional Operational Programme for the Pomeranian Voivodeship for 2014-2020, and completion has been scheduled for the second half of 2019. The laying of the foundation act ceremony took place on 15 October 2018, attended by invited guests, representatives of the UG’s Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics and members of the academic community.

The modern building of the Institute of Informatics is being constructed in the UG Baltic Campus as part of the project entitled “The expansion of the building of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk in Gdańsk for the purposes of practical education”. It will be mainly used by students of Applied Information Technology. The investment is a response to the needs of a job market seeking IT specialists. The building will comprise five storeys (one underground and four overground), with a net floor area of circa 3,912 m2 and a cubic capacity of 22,678 m3. It will be linked to the existing building of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics on the second and third floor levels. The building will contain seminar and computer rooms, auditoria, research and didactic rooms as well as office rooms and communal areas. It will also be suitable for people with disabilities.

The building work completed so far includes foundations, waterproofed basement walls, ceiling over the basement with subfloor installations, the walls of the ground floor and the ceiling over the ground floor (excluding the auditorium). Currently the focus is on the structure of the building and concealed installations and soon construction and assembly work will be underway.

The contractor, selected by public tender, is DORACO Sp. z o.o Building Corporation. The investment is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2019.

The capital investment used to implement the project amounts to over 39 million PLN. The University of Gdańsk received over 21 million PLN funding from the Regional Operational Programme for the Pomeranian Voivodeship for 2014-2020, while the remaining cost of nearly 18.5 million PLN is the university’s own contribution. The project partner is Kainos Software Poland Sp. z o.o.

The ceremony for the laying of the foundation act under the new building of the Institute of Informatics was attended by local and church authorities, Pomeranian members of parliament, rectors of higher education institutions, representatives of scientific institutions as well as representatives of culture, business and media, members of the academic community and, most importantly, representatives of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk.

In his speech, the Rector of the University of Gdańsk, Prof. Jerzy Piotr Gwizdała stressed the significance of the investment: “I very much hope that the construction of the building of the Institute of Informatics of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk will prove an excellent response to the needs of a job market with a constant demand for IT specialists.”

Plans connected with the new building were also discussed by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Prof. Piotr Bojarski and the Director of the Institute of Informatics, Prof. Tomasz Dzido.

“The expansion of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics is connected with the possibility of educating a greater number of IT specialists, especially in response to the needs of the local IT sector companies. The Faculty’s new building will provide education to students of Applied Information Technology. The programme originated, and will be implemented, in close cooperation with IT sector companies which have been present in the life of our faculty for many years”, added Prof. Piotr Bojarski, Dean of the UG’s Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics.
