Detailed rules of admission to the Doctoral School at the Faculty of Biology
ADMISSION PROCEDURE:
Admission is based on a competitive selection process conducted on the basis of the submitted documents and an interview.
ADMISSION CRITERIA:
The maximum number of points that may be obtained in the admission process is 100 points.
I. SUBSTANTIVE EVALUATION OF THE CANDIDATE’S DOCUMENTATION
1. Points for the final result of studies, as stated on the diploma of completion of studies (max. 15 points*):
a) very good – 13 points;
b) good plus – 8 points;
c) good – 3 points.
An additional 2 points shall be awarded for completion of a second-cycle programme or a long-cycle Master’s degree programme in a field of study assigned to the academic discipline in which the candidate is applying for admission to the doctoral school.
2. Academic achievements (max. 30 points):
a) a peer-reviewed academic publication in a journal included in the official list of academic journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings***:
– for an academic article published in a journal assigned 70 points or more: 15 points for a single-author article, 10 points for co-authorship;
– for an academic article published in a journal assigned fewer than 70 points: 8 points for a single-author article, 5 points for co-authorship;
– in the case of a co-authored article, an additional 2 points shall be awarded for each instance of first authorship or corresponding authorship;
b) a peer-reviewed academic publication in a journal not included in the official list of academic journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings*** – 3 points for each article;
c) a peer-reviewed academic monograph published by a publisher included in the official list of publishers of peer-reviewed academic monographs***:
– for a monograph published by a Level II publisher — 200 points (in the case of co-authorship, 20/L is awarded, where “L” is the number of co-authors) – 20 points;
– for a monograph published by a Level I publisher — 80 points (in the case of co-authorship, 10/L is awarded, where “L” is the number of co-authors) – 10 points;
d) a peer-reviewed academic monograph published by a publisher not included in the official list of publishers of peer-reviewed academic monographs*** – 5 points;
e) a chapter in a peer-reviewed academic monograph – 3 points for each chapter;
f) active participation in an academic conference: an oral presentation – 2 points for each presentation (max. 6 points); co-authorship of a presentation – 1 point (max. 3 points); a poster – 1 point for each poster (max. 3 points);
g) acting as principal investigator or project leader in a research project (e.g. NCBiR, NCN, FNP, MNiSW) – 6 points for each project led;
h) participation in a research project on the basis of a contract – 2 points for each project (max. 6 points);
i) an international research internship lasting at least 4 weeks – 4 points for each internship (max. 12 points);
j) a research internship lasting at least 1 week, or an academic course – 1 point for each internship or course (max. 3 points).
3. Other achievements (max. 5 points): an academic award, membership in an academic association or student research club, participation in the organization of an academic conference, certified proficiency in a foreign language at C1 level or higher – 1 point for each achievement.
* If the final result of studies stated on the diploma is expressed on a scale different from that used at the University of Gdańsk, it shall be converted according to the grading scale in force at the University, in accordance with the conversion rules adopted in the regulations governing admission to studies at the University, which shall apply accordingly.
** In the case of publications (points I.2.a–e), only achievements published within the last 5 calendar years as of the deadline for submission of admission documents shall be taken into account.
*** The official list published in accordance with the communication of the minister responsible for higher education and science, as valid on the date registration in the IRK system opens.
II. ADMISSION INTERVIEW
Only a candidate who has uploaded to the IRK system the complete set of documents required for admission and whose documents have been positively verified may be admitted to the interview stage.
1 The admission interview (max. 50 points) consists of:
a) the candidate’s presentation of the research issue (15 minutes);
b) the candidate’s answers to questions asked by the committee (15 minutes).
2. During the interview, the following are assessed:
a) knowledge of issues related to the selected doctoral dissertation topic, including the relevant literature – max. 25 points;
b) knowledge of research methods and correct use of specialist terminology – max. 15 points;
c) ability to present arguments, as well as the structure and logic of the candidate’s statements – max. 10 points.
The minimum total number of points required for admission to the doctoral school within the admission limit is 50 points (including a minimum of 30 points from the admission interview).
