Detailed rules of admission to the Doctoral School at the Faculty of Languages

ADMISSION PROCEDURE:

Admission is based on a competitive selection process conducted on the basis of the submitted documents and an interview.

ADMISSION CRITERIA:

The maximum number of points that may be obtained in the admission process is 130 points.

 

I. SUBSTANTIVE EVALUATION OF THE CANDIDATE’S DOCUMENTATION

1. Points for academic performance during the course of study (max. 15 points*)

1.1. Points for the arithmetic mean of all grades obtained by the candidate during second-cycle studies or a long-cycle Master’s degree programme – max. 5 points:
a) average grade of 4.8 or higher – 5 points;
b) average grade of 4.6–4.799999 – 4 points;
c) average grade of 4.4–4.599999 – 3 points;
d) average grade of 4.2–4.399999 – 2 points;
e) average grade of 4.0–4.199999 – 1 point;
f) average grade below 4.0 – 0 points.

1.2. Points for the grade awarded for the Master’s thesis – max. 5 points:
a) grade of 5.0 – 5 points;
b) grade of 4.5 – 4 points;
c) grade of 4.0 – 2 points;
d) grade below 4.0 – 0 points.

1.3. Points for alignment with the academic discipline – max. 5 points:
a) 2 points shall be awarded for completion of second-cycle studies or a long-cycle Master’s degree programme in a field of study assigned to one of the academic disciplines in which education is provided at the doctoral school (linguistics, literary studies, Polish studies, art studies, cultural and religious studies);
b) 3 points shall be awarded for preparing a Master’s thesis, followed by passing the diploma examination, in an academic discipline corresponding to the discipline in which the candidate is applying for admission to the doctoral school (the correspondence of disciplines is determined on the basis of the diploma supplement).

2. Academic and publication achievements (max. 28 points):

a) a peer-reviewed academic article in a journal included in the official list of academic journals and peer-reviewed international conference proceedings***:
– for each academic article published in a journal assigned 70 points or more: 14 points for a single-author article and 8 points for a co-authored article;
– for each academic article published in a journal assigned 40 points: 8 points for a single-author article and 5 points for a co-authored article;
– for each academic article published in a journal assigned 20 points: 4 points for a single-author article and 2 points for a co-authored article;

b) an academic article in a peer-reviewed academic journal not included in the official list of academic journals and peer-reviewed international conference proceedings*** – 2 points for each article (max. 4 points);

c) a peer-reviewed academic monograph published by a publisher included in the official list of publishers of peer-reviewed academic monographs***:
– for a monograph published by a Level II publisher — 200 points (in the case of co-authorship, 20/L points are awarded, where “L” is the number of co-authors) – 20 points;
– for a monograph published by a Level I publisher — 80 points (in the case of co-authorship, 14/L points are awarded, where “L” is the number of co-authors) – 14 points;

d) a peer-reviewed academic monograph published by a publisher not included in the official list of publishers of peer-reviewed academic monographs*** – 5 points;

e) a chapter in a peer-reviewed academic monograph – 2 points for each chapter;

f) editing a peer-reviewed academic monograph – 1 point for each edited volume;

g) acting as principal investigator or project leader in a research project (NCBiR, NCN, FNP, or MNiSW) – 5 points for each project led;

h) participation in a research project on the basis of a contract or certificate – 2 points for each project (max. 4 points).

3. Other achievements (max. 7 points):

a) an academic award or academic scholarship – 2 points for each award or scholarship;

b) membership in an academic association or student research club – 1 point for each membership;

c) holding a position in an academic association or student research club – 1 point for each position held;

d) delivery of a paper at an international academic conference (confirmed by a certificate or information on the conference website) – 3 points for each paper delivered;

e) delivery of a paper at a national academic conference (confirmed by a certificate or information on the conference website) – 2 points for each paper delivered;

f) a poster presented at a conference or delivery of a paper at a student conference – 1 point for each poster or each paper delivered;

g) participation in the organization of an academic conference – 1 point for each instance of participation;

h) an international research internship lasting at least 4 weeks – 2 points for each internship;

i) certified proficiency in a foreign language at C1 level or higher – 2 points for each language certificate;

j) a popular science publication – 1 point for each publication.

4. A candidate who documents that their doctoral scholarship will be paid from a research project financed from external sources shall receive an additional 30 points.

* If the grading scale at the higher education institution from which the candidate graduated differs from that used at the University of Gdańsk, grades shall be converted according to the grading scale in force at the University, in accordance with the conversion rules adopted in the regulations governing admission to studies at the University, which shall apply accordingly.

** In the case of publications (points I.2.a–f), subject to the third sentence below, only achievements published within the last 5 years as of the deadline for submission of the required admission documents shall be taken into account. A copy of the publication must be attached to the application. In the case of a publication accepted for publication (prior to its planned publication date), the candidate may receive half of the points (awarded in accordance with points I.2.a–f) on the basis of positive reviews (required by the publisher’s or journal’s editorial board), together with the submitted manuscript and a certificate confirming acceptance for publication. Publication of an article on the journal’s website shall be treated in the same way as publication of the printed version of the article.

*** The official list published in accordance with the communication of the minister responsible for higher education and science, as valid on the date registration in the IRK system opens.

 

II. ADMISSION INTERVIEW

Only a candidate who has uploaded to the IRK system the complete set of documents required for admission and whose documents have been positively verified may be admitted to the interview stage.

  1. Subject to point 3, the admission interview (max. 50 points) consists of:
    a) the candidate’s presentation of the research issue (6 minutes);
    b) the candidate’s answers to questions asked by the committee (10 minutes).

  2. During the interview, the following are assessed:
    a) ability to conceptualize and the innovative nature of the proposed research issue – max. 20 points;
    b) knowledge of research methods and the relevant literature, as well as correct use of specialist terminology – max. 15 points;
    c) ability to present arguments and the structure of the candidate’s statement – max. 10 points;
    d) feasibility of the project proposed by the candidate – max. 5 points.

  3. A candidate who documents that their doctoral scholarship will be paid from a research project financed from external sources shall receive 50 points for the admission interview.

The minimum total number of points required for admission to the doctoral school within the admission limit is 50 points (including a minimum of 30 points from the admission interview).
