ADMISSION PROCEDURE:

Admission is based on a competitive selection process conducted on the basis of the submitted documents and an interview.

ADMISSION CRITERIA:

The maximum number of points that may be obtained in the admission process is 130 points.

I. SUBSTANTIVE EVALUATION OF THE CANDIDATE’S DOCUMENTATION

1. Points for the final result of completion of second-cycle studies or a long-cycle Master’s degree programme, as stated on the diploma of completion of studies (max. 15 points*):
a) very good – 13 points;
b) good plus – 8 points;
c) good – 3 points.

An additional 2 points shall be awarded for completion of a second-cycle programme or a long-cycle Master’s degree programme in a field of study assigned to the academic discipline in which the candidate is applying for admission to the doctoral school.

2. Academic achievements (max. 30 points):

a) a peer-reviewed academic article in a journal included in the official list of academic journals and peer-reviewed international conference proceedings***:
– for an academic article published in a journal assigned 70 points or more: 13 points for a single-author article and 8 points for a co-authored article;
– for an academic article published in a journal assigned fewer than 70 points: 8 points for a single-author article and 5 points for a co-authored article;

b) an academic article in a peer-reviewed academic journal not included in the official list of academic journals and peer-reviewed international conference proceedings*** – 3 points for each article;

c) a peer-reviewed academic monograph published by a publisher included in the official list of publishers of peer-reviewed academic monographs***:
– for a monograph published by a Level II publisher — 200 points (in the case of co-authorship, 20/L points are awarded, where “L” is the number of co-authors) – 20 points;
– for a monograph published by a Level I publisher — 80 points (in the case of co-authorship, 14/L points are awarded, where “L” is the number of co-authors) – 14 points;

d) a peer-reviewed academic monograph published by a publisher not included in the official list of publishers of peer-reviewed academic monographs*** – 5 points;

e) a chapter in a peer-reviewed academic monograph – 3 points for each chapter;

f) editing a peer-reviewed academic monograph – 3 points for each edited volume;

g) acting as principal investigator or project leader in a research project (NCBiR, NCN, FNP, or MNiSW) – 6 points for each project led;

h) participation in a research project on the basis of a contract – 2 points for each project (max. 6 points).

3. Other achievements (max. 5 points): an academic award, membership in an academic association or student research club, delivery of a paper at an academic conference, participation in the organization of an academic conference, an international research internship lasting at least 4 weeks, certified proficiency in a foreign language at C1 level or higher, a popular science publication, or another achievement – 1 point for each achievement.

4. A candidate who documents that their doctoral scholarship will be paid from a research project financed from external sources shall receive an additional 30 points.

* If the final result of studies stated on the diploma is expressed on a scale different from that used at the University of Gdańsk, it shall be converted according to the grading scale in force at the University, in accordance with the conversion rules adopted in the regulations governing admission to studies at the University, which shall apply accordingly.

** In the case of publications (points I.2.a–f), only achievements that, as of the deadline for submission of the required admission documents, were published in the period 2022–2026 or are awaiting publication following peer review, as confirmed by an appropriate statement, shall be taken into account.

*** The official list published in accordance with the communication of the minister responsible for higher education and science, as valid on the date registration in the IRK system opens.

II. ADMISSION INTERVIEW – conducted on site at the University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Social Sciences

Only a candidate who has uploaded to the IRK system the complete set of documents required for admission and whose documents have been positively verified may be admitted to the interview stage.

1. Subject to point 3, the admission interview (max. 50 points) consists of:
   a) the candidate’s presentation of the research issue (15 minutes – the candidate prepares a description of the research project in accordance with the specified rules);
   b) the candidate’s answers to questions asked by the committee (15 minutes).

2. During the interview, the following elements are assessed:
   a) ability to conceptualize and the innovative nature of the proposed research issue – max. 20 points;
   b) knowledge of research methods and the relevant literature, as well as correct use of specialist terminology – max. 15 points;
   c) ability to present arguments and the structure of the candidate’s statement – max. 10 points;
   d) feasibility of the project proposed by the candidate – max. 5 points.

3. A candidate who documents that their doctoral scholarship will be paid from a research project financed from external sources shall receive 50 points for the admission interview.

The minimum total number of points required for admission to the doctoral school within the admission limit is 50 points (including a minimum of 30 points from the admission interview).
