Detailed rules of admission to the Intercollegiate Doctoral School of Biotechnology UG and GUMed
ADMISSION PROCEDURE:
Admission is based on a competitive selection process conducted on the basis of the submitted documents and an interview held in English.
ADMISSION CRITERIA:
After registering in the IRK system, the candidate enters in the achievements form the proposed topic of the doctoral dissertation selected from the list published on the doctoral school’s website.
The maximum number of points that may be obtained in the admission process is 100 points.
I. SUBSTANTIVE EVALUATION OF THE CANDIDATE’S DOCUMENTATION
1. Points for the average of all passing grades obtained by the candidate during second-cycle studies or a long-cycle Master’s degree programme*, in accordance with the information provided in the diploma supplement or in a certificate issued by the higher education institution from which the candidate graduated (the number of points is equal to the average grade obtained, calculated to two decimal places) – max. 5 points.
2. Points for the grade awarded for the Master’s thesis* (the number of points is equal to the grade obtained) – max. 5 points.
A candidate who completed a medical degree programme or another programme in which no Master’s thesis was prepared (due to completion of the final diploma examination) shall be awarded, in this category, a number of points equal to the average of all passing grades obtained during second-cycle studies or a long-cycle Master’s degree programme*.
3. Points for certified proficiency in English – points are awarded according to the level of the certificate or equivalent document submitted (max. 5 points):
a) CPE, CAE or higher-level certificates, or completion of studies conducted in English – 5 points;
b) FCE certificate, or a University of Gdańsk certificate at C1 or C2 level – 4 points;
c) a University of Gdańsk certificate at B2 level, or a very good grade in the final language course examination completed during studies – 3 points.
4. Points for authorship of publications in academic journals or patent applications (max. 10 points):
a) an English-language publication in a journal with an Impact Factor, or a patent application – 5 points;
b) an English-language publication in a journal without an Impact Factor – 3 points;
c) a publication in Polish – 1 point.
5. Points for oral presentations or posters presented at conferences (max. 10 points):
a) an oral presentation at an international conference – 3 points;
b) an oral presentation at a national conference – 2 points;
c) a poster or co-authorship of a presentation – 1 point.
6. Points for documented research internships and participation in academic courses (max. 10 points):
a) an internship lasting one month or longer – 5 points;
b) an internship shorter than one month, or an academic course – 1 point for each course or internship.
7. Points for awards received and other achievements (max. 5 points) – 1 point for each award or achievement.
* If the grading scale at the higher education institution from which the candidate graduated differs from that used at the University of Gdańsk, grades shall be converted according to the grading scale in force at the University, in accordance with the conversion rules adopted in the regulations governing admission to studies at the University, which shall apply accordingly.
II. ADMISSION INTERVIEW
Only a candidate who has uploaded to the IRK system the complete set of documents required for admission and whose documents have been positively verified may be admitted to the interview stage.
The interview is conducted in English (max. 50 points) and assesses:
1. knowledge of contemporary challenges in biotechnology – up to 20 points;
2. knowledge of issues related to the selected doctoral dissertation topic – up to 20 points;
3. communication skills and correct use of terminology in English – up to 10 points.
The candidate must obtain at least 50% of the available points in each of the above categories. During the interview, the following are assessed: knowledge of the relevant issues, familiarity with the methods necessary to carry out the project, ability to answer detailed questions, language competence, correctness in formulating arguments, correctness of reasoning, as well as the logic and coherence of the candidate’s statements.
The minimum total number of points required for admission to the doctoral school within the admission limit is 50 points.
